On today’s episode of The Modern Vital Podcast, episode #2, we’re going to talk about electromagnetic fields, also known as EMFs, and what impact they might have on our health. We’re also going to discuss some simple ways to protect yourself from EMFs.
Our Modern Vital Fact of the Day is that preliminary research indicates that magnesium can protect us from EMFs by making calcium channels in ourselves less sensitive to EMFs when our voltage gated calcium channels become more active through EMF exposure, and studies indicate that this is what happens.
Then, calcium moves into our cells, that is intracellularly, and can cause symptoms, such as agitation, brain fog.
The research is preliminary but interesting.
So are EMFs real? Well, most of the time, we don’t feel EMFs. We don’t notice them. They’re ever present. And we might wonder, are they even real?
First of all, a good primer on EMFs that I highly recommend is called The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs: How to Fix Our Stupid Use of Technology by Nick Pinault.
When I think of sensitivity to EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies, I think of the recluse attorney, Chuck, from Better Call Saul, who wrapped himself in a tin foil space blanket to ward off EMF exposure. Chuck had a condition called electromagnetic hypersensitivity, EHS, and it is a real diagnosis.
So what are electromagnetic fields? Exactly? Well, EMFs, also known as electromagnetic fields, are basically charged particles in motion, which create magnetic fields. These charged particles accelerate and create electric fields, which when in motion, also produce magnetic fields. Our organs and cells have their own fields because they contain charged particles in motion.
Did you know that the average age a child gets their first smartphone is six years old, at least according to a 2021 survey. Hard to believe, right? The point is that our kids are exposed at younger and younger ages, to cumulatively higher amounts of EMF radiation. And we have enough studies showing that this is not necessarily a good thing.
Fortunately, there are a few key ways that we can control our EMF exposure in our homes without too much trouble. But first one principle that can be employed, in fact, I think, it must be employed, is a principle called the precautionary principle.
In other words, those who resist using new products until their potential unknown effects on our health are better understood, are employing the precautionary principle. And I believe it’s highly indicated to employ it, especially when it comes to technology and our health is easier said than done, though, right?
Since 1996, telecom companies in the US have been protected by the Telecommunications Act TCPA as the industry spent 50 million in their lobbying efforts to obtain this protection, which has helped to ensure that these telecom companies are immune to the health threats of electromagnetic fields’ SAR rating. Have you ever heard of that? So telecom companies must stay compliant with FCC guidelines, which require that consumers are exposed to what’s called a safe amount of radiofrequency radiation, also known as SAR.
SAR stands technically for specific absorption rate. So, it’s the rate at which the body is absorbing electromagnetic radiation.
So when you hold a cell phone next to your head, the SAR exposure for that phone is actually four times its SAR rating. What?
Unfortunately, most companies do not offer much actual research to back up any claims they might make about providing safe devices or EMF mitigation.
So what are some of the most common symptoms of EMF exposure? Headache, tremor, dizziness, memory loss, loss of concentration, ADHD, like symptoms, sleep disturbance, agitation.
So, now I’m going to briefly discuss what I think are the top seven ways to reduce our EMF exposure.
Number #1. Turn your WiFi off at night. Approximately a third of our lives is spent sleeping and the number one source of EMF exposure in the home is the WiFi router. WiFi uses radio frequency or RF to communicate with your devices, exposing your household to EMF radiation.
We can entirely cut at least a third of this exposure out of our lives by simply turning our WiFi off at night. Now of course, this may vary depending on the situation, as those of us who may live in an apartment complex, we’re exposed to different sources.
It is recommended to keep your WiFi router as far away from where you spend the most time in your house as possible, or as far away from the bedroom as possible.
If you can’t turn it off at night, wireless routers emit EMF radiation in the low gigahertz frequency. And these levels are still potentially dangerous, especially the closer we are to the Wi Fi router for long periods of time.
Number #2. Put your cell phone into airplane mode at night.
I’m amazed at how many of my patients sleep next to their phone and just leave it running and maybe even charging.
Our cell phones connect themselves to our WiFi routers, Bluetooth accessories, cellular network towers by sending out radio frequencies, or RF signals which are disabled when our phone is in airplane mode. This completely ends any EMF radiation exposure that our phone might be emitting.
Cellphone radiation is extremely low frequency radiation, elf, and radiofrequency radiation. So, it’s two different types of radiation.
If you like to have your phone next to your bed at night, the first step is to put it in airplane mode. And the second step is to not charge it next to your bed. If you do have to charge it, I recommend making sure it’s at least four feet away, but better to have it in another room altogether.
Number #3. Do not use a baby monitor for your child.
So, baby monitors emit EMF radiation while maintaining a connection between the camera and the monitor. By way of radio frequency, particularly the WiFi enabled monitors emit large amounts of EMFs which can disrupt our baby’s sleep.
One way to remove or reduce EMF exposure while using a baby monitor is to use voice activation, so the monitor only turns on when there’s a sound. There are also now low EMF monitors on the market, so you can do your research, such as analog baby monitors.
Number #4. Do not place your cell phone to your ears, but rather use headphones.
As mentioned earlier, when you hold a cell phone next to your head, the SAR exposure for that phone is four times its SAR rating. In other words, it’s rated for safety.
And if you’re listening to your phone or talking on your phone next to your head, it’s emitting four times the safe amount of radiation.
SAR technically stands again for specific absorption rate. So that absorption rate is four times higher than it’s supposed to be.
Phone cases can also increase SAR radiation by 20% to 70%. I know that’s a pretty broad range.
Now one option would be to not use a cell phone case. There are also some cell phone cases on the market that are safe. I’ve tried them and I haven’t found one that I like but you can do your research.
So, it is safest to hold your phone away from your head when using it and to use a headset when talking on the phone.
Number #5. Install dirty electricity filters in your house and/or your office.
Dirty electricity is also known as DE. We are surrounded by dirty electricity such as the EMFs emitted by CFL light bulbs, electronic chargers, smart TVs. The wiring from wall sockets or mains.
I use a meter in my home and in my office building, and I use dirty electricity filters such as the ones available by Greenwave.
And I noticed a significant difference in how my personal space feels as well as my professional space. Not to mention it’s really quite eye opening to see the measured dirty electricity just drop, you know, from 150 millivolts to below 25 millivolts after putting the dirty electricity filters into the main that you’re testing.
Number #6. Do not place your laptop on your lap for long periods of time.
Easier said than done, right?
There are shields available on the market if you must have your laptop on your lap for long periods of time or for pregnant women. Obviously EMFs from a laptop can impact fertility, if our vital organs are directly exposed for too long.
Number #7. Put wireless wearables into airplane mode.
This goes for your Apple Watch and your Oura Ring.
No, you don’t have to kill them, but you also don’t have to buy them in the first place either.
So to summarize the top seven ways to reduce EMF exposure. Number #1, turn your WiFi off at night. Number #2, put your cell phone into airplane mode at night. Number #3, do not use a baby monitor for your child. Number #4, do not place your cell phone to your ears, but rather use headphones. Number #5, install dirty electricity filters in your house and or your office after testing. Number #6, do not place your laptop on your lap for long periods of time. And #7, put wireless wearables into airplane mode.
All right, well, I just want to throw out there that preliminary research also indicates that a couple of nutrients can be beneficial in protecting us from EMF exposure.
The first one is magnesium, which we already discussed, and the second one is glutathione, which is our body’s main antioxidant. Studies are limited and research is preliminary, but it’s out there.
